I came into this world with a crayon in hand; my childhood home was covered in art that both exasperated my mother and perplexed my father, a civil engineer. 

The Elk's Club Father-Daughter Dance was an annual event in Lewiston, Idaho. My dad (who would rather have a root canal than dance) obligingly cleared his calendar. I remember going dress shopping for the soiree like it was yesterday. I pushed my way through Bon Marche clothing racks on a fashion mission that would make Anna Wintour feel cringe-y, choosing the canary yellow polka-dotted dress with the giant lace collar in two seconds flat. By today's standards, the dress is hideous—but what a statement it was. The sales clerk was thrilled and proudly stated "Congratulations, Mr. Willard, your daughter just picked our most expensive dress on the rack!"
